Solo and Small Ensemble Assessments

 

Events – Types of Entries

Solo and Small Ensemble Assessment Events provide opportunities for individual students and small groups of performers.

Solo – A student may perform only one solo on a given instrument.

Small Ensemble (2 – 18 members plus accompanist) – A student may perform in no more than two ensembles on any given instrument.

Student Conductor – A student conductor may participate if conducting an ensemble consisting of a minimum of sixteen members and the performance stays within the six-minute time limit.

Eligibility

Students who are members of their school’s music ensemble and whose teachers are current members of LMEA are eligible to participate in Solo & Ensemble Assessment.

Teachers who are non-members may enter their students in the Solo & Ensemble Assessment upon payment of a non-member fee along with the regular student entry fees.

Students may participate in only one district-level Solo and Ensemble Assessment per year.

Fees

Solos – $5.00 per solo
Ensembles – $5.00 per ensemble member

Fees should be paid to the student’s school. A single school check, payable to L.M.E.A. District IX, should be issued by the registration deadline for all students auditioning from a participating school.

Mail the check, registration form, and a copy of your LMEA membership card to the chairperson of the solo and ensemble assessment you plan to attend.

Music Requirements

Memorization

Instrumental:  Memorization is not required for either solos or small ensembles.

Vocal:  Soloists are required to perform from memory or be rated one division lower. Memorization for vocal ensembles is optional.

Musical Selections

Vocal – Students should perform appropriate art songs, folk songs, spirituals, or other standard vocal literature. Broadway and show tunes, movie tunes, or pop songs are not considered appropriate literature.

Strings – Selections must be chosen from the current Texas UIL Prescribed Music List for Orchestra, the Suzuki Method Books, or from the All-State prepared materials list.

String solos should be chosen from the following levels:

High School (9-12):  UIL – Class 1 or 2; Suzuki Vol. 3-10
Jr. High/Middle (6-8):  UIL – Class 2 or 3; Suzuki Vol. 1-3
Elementary (4-6):  Any source

String ensembles should be chosen from the following levels:

High School (9-12): UIL – Class 1 or 2 String Orchestra*
Jr. High/Middle (6-8): UIL – Class 2 or 3 String Orchestra*
Elementary (4-6): Any source

* The large ensemble string orchestra list may serve as a supplemental source for quartets and quintets.

Note: Special instrumentation not listed on either the Texas may be selected from any source.

Harp and Guitar – May select solo and ensemble material from any source.

Judge’s Copy of Music

All events (solo or ensemble) must provide the judge one original copy of each selection with the measures numbered. Note: Duplicated scores are accepted ONLY if accompanied by written permission from the copyright owner. Students should number all measures.

Vocal – 2 choices

Location:  Fontainebleau High
Assessment Date:  February 9, 2017
Time:  All events will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis as soon as the registration form and payment are received. If there are any scheduling concerns, let the chairperson know when the registration is submitted.
Registration Deadline:  January 27, 2017
Mail the registration form, copy of LMEA membership card, and fees (see information above) to the event chairperson.

Location:  Northshore High
Assessment Date:  February 9, 2017
Time: All events will be scheduled on a first come, first served basis as soon as the registration form and payment are received. If there are any scheduling concerns, please let the chairperson know A.S.A.P.
Registration Deadline:  January 27, 2017
Mail the registration form, copy of LMEA membership card, and fees (see information above) to the event chairperson.


 

Responsibilities of Participating Schools

  • Submit the Solo and Small Ensemble Entry Form (found under “Forms” in this site’s menu or in the September issue of The Louisiana Musician) by the registration deadline.
  • Submit a single school check for the entry fees and a copy of your LMEA membership card by the registration deadline.
  • Submit a list of the students’ names with the titles of each solo or ensemble selection.
  • Participating teachers are responsible for the behavior of their students while on the host campus. Students must stay in the designated areas and not disturb the daily operation of host school in any way.

 

 Responsibilities of the Chairperson 

  • Contact an adjudicator as soon as possible. Chairpersons should NOT hire the same adjudicator each year.
    For more information, see “Standards of Adjudication” in the LMEA Handbook or contact the District Director.
  • Schedule events at six minute intervals for high school and five minute intervals for elementary and junior high schools.
  • Provide a warm-up room.
  • Adjudication Forms – Fill out the information on the top of adjudication forms, including the title of selections, before the event. Links to these forms can also be found by clicking “Forms” in the menu.
  • Complete the following forms on the day of the event.  Get the adjudicator’s signature as required on the forms.

Expense Vouchers (adjudicator signs)
Medal Request Forms for each participating school (adjudicator signs each)
Schedule of Events and Ratings

  •  Upon completion of the assessment, mail these forms and all registration forms and checks for fees received from participating teachers to the District Director.
  • Adjudicator’s Payment will be mailed by the District Director as soon as all forms and fees are received.
