Large Ensemble – Band


Performance Requirements

All ensemble entries are required to perform three (3) selections. No ensemble is allowed to perform two selections written by or arranged by the same person.

Directors must provide three original scores of each selection for the adjudicators. These scores must have each measure numbered. Duplicated scores will be accepted only if accompanied by written permission from the copyright owner. Directors with illegal material will not be allowed to participate.

Ensembles performing with a student conductor must have an additional original copy of their performance selection for the sight-reading adjudicator.

Required Selection

  • High Schools
    All bands and wind ensembles classified AAAA, AAA, AA, A, or B are required to choose one selection from the current LMEA Band Prescribed Music List based on their classification. This list is available on the LMEA website. The other two selections from be chosen from any source.

Note: These levels are considered a minimum level. Any group may perform a required number from a higher grade level without changing its classification. 

  • Schools entering as a 7, 8, or 9 classification must choose one selection from any grade on the LMEA Band Prescribed Music List. The other two selections may be chosen from any source.
  • Second Groups (training groups) – the level of the required selection will be two levels lower than the top group.
  • Third Groups – the level of the required selection will be one level lower than the second group.
  • Class D – the level of the required selection will be assigned when the “D” classification is granted.
  • All other classes including 4, 5, and 6 classifications may choose all three selections from any source provided no two selections are written by or arranged by the same person.

Performance Time Limits

Performances are subject to the following total time limits:

Bands – Class 9A and below – 25 minutes
Bands – Class C and above – 30 minutes
Wind Ensembles – 30 minutes

All AAAA bands and any band performing a grade 5 or higher required selection that is 18 minutes or longer, will be allotted 45 minutes. Note: This 18 minute or longer piece must be on the LMEA Band Prescribed Music List. Be aware that the 45 minute time allotment is on/off stage.

Penalty for exceeding the time limit: The score of any ensemble that causes a delay of 10 minutes or more will be lowered by one rating. 

Warm-up times will correspond to performance time limits.



Sight-reading is required for all bands and wind ensembles in classes AAAA, AAA, AA, A, B, D, F, and all groups with a 7, 8, or 9 preceding their classification. Sight-reading is optional for all other groups. However, in order to qualify for State Assessmens, groups must sightread at District Assessments. This includes class G with 100% beginners.

All groups are allowed total of 8 minutes for the examination and discussion of the sight-reading music. See the LMEA website for specific procedures.

Scheduling concerns must be submitted with registration.
Registration Deadline  February 2, 2018 (postmark)
A late fee of $50 will be assessed if this deadline is not met. Late fees must be paid before a school will be scheduled.
