Jr. High District Honor Band

Two Jr. High District Honor Bands

The top band will be slightly smaller; the second band will be the include the regular honor band instrumentation.

This Year’s Clinicians

This year’s Jr. High Honor Band clinician (first band) is Robin Hochkeppel.
This year’s Jr. High Honor Band clinician (second band) is Robin Daigle.

Eligibility

Students in grades 6 – 9 whose directors are currently members of LMEA are eligible to audition. A student auditioning for the District Honor Band must be a member of their school’s instrumental music program.

  • Students in 9th grade may audition for either Jr. High or Sr. High School District Honor Band.
  • Students in 8th grade may audition for either Jr. High or Sr. High School District Honor Band. However, if an 8th grader plans to audition for the high school band, they must also audition for the jr. high band. Should a 8th grader be selected to the high school group, they’ll be dropped from the jr. high and an alternate will be added.

Audition Date, Fee, and Location

Date: December 16, 2017
Location: Fontainebleau Jr. High
Time: • Times will begin at 8:30 am
• Individual times will be assigned after registration deadline.
Fee: • $10.00 per audition
• Students auditioning on more than one instrument must pay the fee for each instrument.
• Students should pay the audition fee to their school.
• A single school check, payable to L.M.E.A. District IX, must be mailed by the deadline to: Val Estoque. A hard copy of the registration form must be included.
Registration Form: Directors must fill out and submit the registration form online by the deadline to assure that your students are scheduled.
Student Information Release Form: Directors must turn in an “LMEA Student Information Release Form” for each student auditioning before students will be allowed to audition. Send these forms to the chairperson.
Registration Deadline: • Registration form must be submitted and check must be postmarked by November 17, 2017.
• Be aware that schools will be assessed a $50.00 late fee if this deadline is not met. Students who are registered late will be assigned whatever times are still available.

Audition Requirements

Scales or Rudiments (30% of score)

Scales
Students are responsible for six major scales in the concert keys of G, C, F, B-flat, E-flat, and A-flat, as well as their chromatic scale. These scales will be played in eighth notes, tongued ascending and slurred descending.

Note:  All scales are listed in CONCERT keys except the chromatic scale.
The chromatic scale gives the actual starting note.

Rudiments for Batter Percussion
Students will be required to play the following rudiments instead of scales. They must all be played as “open-closed-open.”

Prepared Etudes (40% of score)

All etudes can be found in the Rubank Intermediate Method Book. The page and etude number are listed on the etude chart.

Sight-Reading (30% of score)

All students will be required to sight-read a short piece. They are encouraged to practice sight-reading in various time signatures and keys and be comfortable with accidentals and a variety of rhythms (including syncopation, triplets, dotted rhythms, and rests).

Audition Results

The selection process is based on the cumulative scale, etude, and sight-reading score. All chair ties will be broken by the sight-reading score. Audition results will be posted on this site as soon as available – usually the night of auditions. Select on “Audition Results” in the menu.

Fee: • $20.00 fee per ensemble member
• Fees must be received no later than the first rehearsal.
• A single school check, payable to L.M.E.A. District IX, must either be received by the first rehearsal. Either mail to Val Estoque (so that she receives it by this date) or bring to first rehearsal.
