All-State Choir


Please note that, although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of all information printed here, it is the student’s responsibility to check with his/her director for any changes in audition requirements or schedules.


 

This page contains specific information about auditioning for All-State Choir: 1st round, 2nd round, audition requirements for both auditions, help session for 2nd round, results.

General Information (including a description of ensembles, eligibility, performance location, audition process, and other information) is on an separate page.

Although students are eligible for membership in only one All-State ensemble, an exception is made for vocalists who audition for and are selected to perform with the jazz ensemble.

Each school's audition times will be assigned after the registration deadline.

Fee:

• $10.00 per entry.
• Students - Fees should be paid to the student's school.
• Directors - A single school check, payable to L.M.E.A. District IX Vocal Account, must be mailed to Paula Vickers, Mandeville Middle School, 2525 Soult St., Mandeville, LA 70448. Include a hard copy of the registration form.

Registration Deadline:

• Registration form must be submitted and check must be postmarked by August 25, 2017.
• Be aware that schools will be assessed a $50.00 late fee if this deadline is not met.
• Students who are registered late will be assigned whatever times are still available.
• All late entries must be received at least 5 days prior to an event.

LMEA Student Information Release Form:

Directors must turn in an "LMEA Student Information Release Form" for each student auditioning before students will be allowed to audition.

1st Round Audition Requirements:

NOTE: There is a different prepared piece for 2nd Round. See below.

Prepared Piece – Students are required to prepare the appropriate voice part (SSAATTBB) of the 1st round performance selection as listed below. They will audition using the CD* track that omits their voice part.

2014 – “Richte Mich, Gott” by Mendelssohn, arr. Jerry Wesley Harris (SSAATTBB), Warner Bros. #LG70179. This is to be sung in German.

2015 – “Shenandoah” arr. by Steven Sametz (SSAATTBB), Oxford University Press #978-0-19-386633-1. Learning tracks and audition tracks can be found on the LMEA website.

2016 – “Crucifixus” by Lotti (SSAATTBB), Walton Music Corp., OCT6006. Also, CPDL version #00214 (free download) may also be used in place of the Walton version. This is to be sung in Latin.

2017 – “Heilig” (Holy) by Mendelssohn (for double choir), Walton Music Corp. #W2163. This is to be sung in German. Learning tracks and audition tracks can be found on the LMEA website.

2018 – “O Vos Omnes” by Pablo Casals, Tetra Music #TC128. This is to be sung in Latin.

Sightreading is required. The sight-reading track that will be used in the audition is on the “audition CD.” Students should become familiar with the appropriate voice part’s sight-reading track. These are the keys for each part.

Soprano 1 & Tenor 1 – F major
Soprano 2 & Tenor 2 – E major
Alto 1 & Bass 1 – E-flat major
Alto 2 & Bass 2 – D Major

Students will be adjudicated as follows:

Intonation – 25 pts.
Part accuracy – 25 pts.
Tone quality – 25 pts.
Musicianship – 15 pts.
Sightreading – 10 pts.
(Total 100 pts.)

 

1st Round Audition Results:

First round audition results will be posted on this site as soon as available – usually the night of auditions. Each district is allowed to send their top 5 students per part to 2nd round auditions.

 

Help Session for 2nd Round All-State Choir Auditions

Students qualifying for 2nd round auditions are invited to a workshop focusing on the 2nd round audition piece and sight-reading in preparation for this audition. They should come knowing their music.

2nd Round Audition Requirements:

Prepared Piece – There will be a different required performance selection for 2nd round – it is listed below. This piece, in SSAATTBB, will be selected from the current All-State Program by the All-State Conductor. Students will audition using the CD* track that omits their voice part.

*Note: Directors can download the rehearsal and audition tracks from the state website (lmeamusic.org).

2017

“To Thee Cherubim and Seraphim” by Handel, edited by Alex Favazza, published by Hinshaw Music HMC2530.
This selection is only in 5 parts (SSATB). Sopranos will divide soprano 1 and soprano 2 as always. Alto 1 and 2 will sing the alto part, Tenor 1 and 2 will sing the Tenor part, and Bass 1 and 2 will sing the Bass part. The parts cover the ranges necessary for all the other pieces to be performed this year at all-state. There will be 8 separate audition rooms as usual, there will be no combining.
